Minor League Seasons Start TonightPosted: April 7, 2011
Exactly one week after the Yankees opened up their 2011 season, four of their minor league affiliates will start their season’s tonight. Triple A Scranton, Double A Trenton, High-A Tampa, and Low-A Charleston will all start tonight. Not really big news, but just something to keep an eye out on.
Andrew Brackman is a back-end starter for Scranton and Dellin Betances and Manny Banuelos will round out Trenton’s rotation at number four and number five, respectively. Other big names that pop up are Hector Noesi and David Phelps who will start for Scranton, Austin Romine, Melky Mesa, and Steve Garrison, in Trenton and for Tampa, Brett Marshall and Zoilo Almonte are two guys to watch.
According to a scout I talked to while at Spring Training, Low-A Charleston is the team that is really stacked. This is where another team might look if they want to possibly make a trade. Gary Sanchez and JR Murphy (both catchers) are probably two of the biggest bats on the team, although Murphy is trying to convert to third base. The team also feature outfielder Slade Heathcott and Cito Culver, two former first round draft picks.
In somewhat of a ‘transition year,’ it will be interesting to see what type of season’s the guys above post. If the Yankees do wind up having major problems with their starting pitching and they need to make a near-deadline deal, expect a few of these guys to be included in it.
