CC Not Sharp In 4-2 LossPosted: May 4, 2011
I felt really good about tonight’s game heading in. The Yankees were on a three game winning streak, the Tigers were on the a seven game losing streak, and CC Sabathia was on the bump against a struggling Brad Penny. It seemed like it could be a win. However, Detroit surprised me and they took the second game of this four game set by a score of 4-2.
Coming off of two solid starts and two wins, I was thinking that Sabathia would keep it going and turn in another dominating performance. I was wrong. He didn’t have the control he normally does. On the first pitch of the game, Russell Martin called for a pitch on the outside corner.
It ran in, and Austin Jackson smacked it for a double. CC would get tagged for two in the first and two fifth, but other than that was good. He worked very economically and his final line would be 7 IP, 10 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 119 P (76 strikes). It wasn’t his best outing, but CC did keep them in the game.
With another lengthy start from a starting pitcher, Joe Girardi didn’t have to do much with his bullpen. He simply sent out David Robertson for the eighth who worked in and out of trouble by allowing two runners on base. This is another solid night in regard to the pen though because any day where you can rest most of the arms back there is a good one.
Offensively, the Bombers were very quiet against Penny. They only scratched out one run against him on an RBI double by Russell Martin. This was followed by the key play in the game when with one out Brett Gardner flew out to right and Andruw Jones was thrown out at the plate trying to tag up.
The Yanks did make Penny throw a lot of pitches, but he was always able to wiggle his way out of innings unscathed. It should be noted that they scored their other run on a Mark Teixeira solo shot (his eighth of the season). Once again they had a pretty rough night in the RISP department, however, going 1-for-5, Martin getting the only hit. This gonna have to improve if they are going to stay hot and keep winning ball games.
Sure it was a loss, but there are some positives to take from tonight’s game. There is always tomorrow though when these two teams will play again in the third game of this series. It will once again be a 7:05 first pitch on the YES network.
