Carlos Silva Update

Carlos Silva signed a minor league contract with the Yankees in April after the Cubs released him after Spring Training.  After spending some time in extended Spring Training, he has now started to make minor league rehab starts.  In two starts with High-A Tampa he threw 7 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 9 K, 2 BB.  Then, his last start was for Double A Trenton he went six innings giving up one unearned runs, three hits, no walks and struck out six.

As we all know Silva is a sinker-ball pitcher meaning he lives on the ground ball.  The amount of strikeouts he has been piling up has to do with the quality of hitters he is facing.  Once he gets to Triple A, I’m sure that will go down and hopefully the amount of ground balls he gets goes up.  I believe his opt-out clause is for some time in June, so it will be interesting to see what they do with him.
