Should We Bring Juan Rivera Back?Posted: July 6, 2011
In the last week, the Blue Jays designated first baseman and outfielder Juan Rivera for assignment. He must clear waivers before the Blue Jays can try to trade for him. I think he is someone that the Yankees should definitely consider bringing in.
Rivera is a right-handed bat off the bench and nothing more really. He had a major platoon split batting .219/.276/.318 against right handed pitching and .327/.400/.509 against south paws. If he was acquired, he would take the place of Andruw Jones as the fourth outfielder and only play against lefties.
Jones hasn’t had a great year at all only hitting .234/.310/.453 with four homers against south paws and against righties he’s much worse. He is probably a better fielder than Rivera is, but not by much. In the case that the Yanks do make a change, they would have to eat the $2 million they are paying Jones and maybe just take only some of Rivera’s $5.25 million salary. Also, if they trade for Rivera, they shouldn’t give up much at all.
I don’t see the Bombers making a change because it seems like a little too much trouble for roster spot that doesn’t mean all that much, but is Jones continues to struggle, Cashman could pull the trigger to help strengthen the bench, especially with Eric Chavez out for who knows how long.
