Is Ubaldo Worth It?

It’s that time of year again.  The All-Star Break has just passed and there are only two or so weeks before the trade deadline.  The Yankees are in need of a top tier starting pitcher and the market is not very accommodating.  There are the Wandy Rodriguez’s and the Hiroki Kuroda’s out there, but switching leagues as only a middle-rotation guy could take a toll on their numbers.  So what should the Yanks do?

Well, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports brought up the fact that the Reds were talking to the Rockies about a trade for Ubaldo Jimenez.  Colorado said they were not shopping Ubaldo around, but they would listen to offers and if one sounded right, they would consider it. This being said, I’m sure the Yankees brass is having the discussion they have every year: should they trade Jesus Montero?

Montero is having something of a down year (.338 wOBA), prompting Keith Law to drop him out of the top ten in his most recent prospect list and down to 21.  His walks are down and strikeouts are up (although small amounts), but more importantly, his power numbers are down.  The good news, however, is that he had similar numbers this time last season and then tore apart the IL in the second half.  The other high point, is that he is only 21 and still has a lot of value in that sense.

If the Rockies are going to move Jimenez, they would probably ask for a lot so Montero is a good place to start.  They will probably also want an MLB ready starter since they are looking to contend in the near-future with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki and Ivan Nova Nova does fit the mold quite well.  He has shown that he can succeed in the American League and he is only 24 years old.  A deal built around these two is probably as good of an offer as they are gonna get.

Of course this would not be all it would take more than just those two pieces.  It would at least take another piece or two.  I would say Dellin Betances or Manny Banuelos would probably be in the trade as well, as well as someone in the lower levels.  I know it seems like a lot, but the Bombers need a guy like him pretty badly.

It’s not so much that they don’t have five solid starters, but more the fact that there is a huge drop off after CC Sabathia.  They need a guy to slot in between Sabathia and the next few and someone who can take the ball in Game 2 of a playoff series.

With the trade deadline quickly approaching, there is no question that the Yankees need a starter and there is not much to choose from.  Jimenez is definitely a nice option, but how realistic is he and would it be worth it to give up the guys mentioned above.  Brian Cashman doesn’t seem to like trading top prospects, so Ubaldo might just be something we can dream on.
