Yankees @ Rays Series PreviewPosted: July 18, 2011
The Yankees and Rays head into this series in two very different ways. After dropping their first two in Toronto, the Yanks bats awakened and they were able to salvage a split. The Rays, on the other hand, seemingly just stopped playing their 16-inning marathon with the Boston Red Sox in which they lost 1-0. Hopefully they show some exhaustion tonight.
Anyway, the Bombers head into Tampa five and a half games above the Rays in both American League East and the Wild Card. Since I previewed the Rays just last week, you click here for a more in-depth review of them then you will get in this post. If you do go to the other one, you will see where they rank in many statistical categories and a projected lineup. In this post, I’m just gonna outline the pitching match-ups and a few players to watch:
AJ Burnett (8-7, 4.15 ERA) vs. Alex Cobb (2-0, 3.41 ERA)
Bartolo Colon (6-5, 3.47 ERA) vs. Jeremy Hellickson (8-7, 3.21 ERA)
Freddy Garcia (7-7, 3.43 ERA) vs. David Price (9-7, 3.73 ERA)
CC Sabathia (14-4, 2.64 ERA) vs. James Shields (8-8, 2.60 ERA)
Players To Watch
You gotta watch out for Bart Colon obviously. His last two starts have been pretty bad and a bounce back would be nice. On the Rays side of the ball, look out for Casey Kotchman, he’s a Gold Glove caliber first baseman and has suddenly found it with the bat this year. I’ll say they Yanks take two and head home satisfied.
