Shields Outduels CC, Yanks LosePosted: July 22, 2011
Just like the first time that these two pitches met this season, James Shields and CC Sabathia had another intense pitcher’s duel between them, but once again the home team won. The Rays won, but the Yanks played well. Let’s recap:
- CC Sabathia was very good once again tossing a complete game while allowing two runs on five hits and striking out. The difference between CC tonight and him in his last few starts was that he didn’t have great command tonight.
- He walked four and he was missing some spots. One big mistake came in the first when he allowed a solo jack to Evan Longoria and then when he gave up an RBI triple to Sam Fuld. He still didn’t deserve to lose though.
- James Shields was very good and he gave the Yanks very few chances. In the first, they had runners on first and second with two outs and Nick Swisher grounded up the middle where Elliot Johnson had him perfectly played with a shift. Then in the eighth, Nick Swisher came up with Robinson Cano on second (he had just doubled in Derek Jeter) and two outs and flied out.
- Robbie Cano led the way with two hits, while Brett Gardner, Jeter, Jorge Posada, Russell Martin, and Eduardo Nunez each added hits as well. The team only had four at bats with runners in scoring position though.
I don’t have much else to say about this one. At least they got the split and now the Bombers will head back to New York for a ten game home stand.
