Yankees Farm Report: July 23, 2011Posted: July 24, 2011
Kevin Russo and Doug Bernier each had two hits, Russo doubled, scored a run, and is now hitting .357 and Bernier scored twice. Jesus Montero also had a big day going 1 for 3 with three ribbies and a walk and Greg Golson added a hit too. Greg Smith actually pitched well allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven. Buddy Carlyle walked three and gave up a hit in 1.1 scoreless innings and Randy Flores pitched a clean 0.2 innings. Kevin Whelan finished things off with a perfect ninth to nail down his nineteenth save of the year.
Dellin Betances was awful. He allowed four runs on four hits and three walks while only striking out two. He also gave up two homers. Chase Whitley relieved him and tossed two scoreless innings and struck out three. Josh Romanski added a scoreless inning and Ryan Flannery walked four in 1.1 innings and also gave up a run. On offense, Damon Sublett went 3 for 4, doubled, and drove in a run, Rob Lyerly went 2 for 4 with a solo jack, and Ray Kruml and Zoilo Almonte each added a hit a piece, Kruml doubled and Zoilo scored twice and walked twice.Austin Romine, Corban Joseph, and Melky Mesa all went hitless.
Eric Chavez continued his rehab going 1 for 2 with a homer and DH’ed for six innings. Cody Johnson continued to rake going 2 for 4 with two doubled and two runs scored, Kelvin Castro went 2 for 3 with a triple, two runs scored, and a walk, and Ronnier Mustelier went 2 for 4. Kyle Roller and Rob Segedin went a combined 0 for 10 with four strikeouts. Sean Black was on the bump and he allowed five runs on three hits and four walks in 3.1 innings. Mike Gipson, Ronny Marte, and Preston Claiborne all pitched in scoreless innings to finish the game.
Anderson Feliz went 2 for 3 with a double, a triple, and a two runs scored, Shane Brown went 1 for 4, Kevin Mahoney went 1 for 4 with two ribbies, and Jeff Farnham went 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored. Scottie Allen was very good yielding a run on five hits while striking out four over six innings. Mark Montgomery got the save tossing 1.1 innings and struck out one batter.
Ben Gamel went 3 for 4 with two doubles and four ribbies, Cody Grice went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and a walk, and Mason Williams, Angelo Gumbs, Zach Wilson, and Reymond Nunez each had hits, Williams scored and walked, Gumbs drove in a run, Wilson doubled, and scored two runs, and drove one in. Richard Martinez got the start and hurled five frames of one-run baseball and struck out five. Caleb Cotham and Matthew Tracy each threw two scoreless innings as well.
Dante Bichette had yet another perfect day going 4 for 4 with two doubles, two ribbies, two runs scored, and two walks. He is now batting .305 on the year; what a turn around. Yeicock Calderon went 3 for 5 with two doubles, a run driven in, and two scored, Claudio Custodio had two hits, a walk, and a run scored, and the bottom three in the lineup combined to go 8 for 18 with four runs scored and six RBI’s. Ravel Santana went hitless, but did walk twice and score a run.
Gabe Encinas got the start today and only allowed two hits in five scoreless innings while striking out four, but he did also walk four. Joel De La Cruz followed by giving up three runs on four hits and two walks in two innings. George Isabel and Reinier Casanova followed by each allowing one unearned run in their respective innings of work.
