CC Flirts With Perfection, Yanks Win 4-1Posted: July 27, 2011
It’s always great when you witness history and we almost did today. It was overall a flawless win for the Yanks, in which they did everything right. Let’s recap:
- CC Sabathia was crazy good. He was perfect through 6.1 innings and struck out seven straight hitters at one point. Sure it was against the Mariners, but whenever you strike out fourteen in seven innings, it’s always impressive. He had a very good fastball/slider combo, like he has over his last several starts which was pretty to see sustained through two rain delays. He did walk three straight to start the eighth before being taken out though.
- Through three innings, Doug Fister was matching CC punch for punch. In the fourth with one, Curtis Granderson seemingly poked one down the left field line and it wound up making the first row of the seats. In the next inning, they pushed two runs across, one on an Eric Chavez RBI single and the other on a Derek Jeter RBI ground out. Mark Teixeira added a solo jack in the eighth.
- David Robertson came on to clean up Sabathia’s mess and did a very good job of playing the role of fireman. It went strikeout, ground out, strikeout, and the inning was over. Mariano Rivera came on for the ninth and was perfect as he fanned two.
- Mark Teixeira and Jorge Posada each had two hits, Eric Chavez had one in his return from the disabled list and Brett Gardner and Nick Swisher each notched one as well.
The Yankees will try to make the Mariners losing streak eighteen as they go for the sweep and Felix Hernandez will take on Phil Hughes.
