Yankees @ White Sox Series Preview

After a very successful 7-3 home stand, the Yankees now hit the road for seven games which start in Chicago against the White Sox. The ChiSox come into this series four games out of the American League Central at 52-54 and have won five of their last eight. Let’s preview.

Chicago is a middle-of-the-pack team on offense. They are mediocre in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, wOBA and are in the bottom five in BB%, wRC+, stolen bases, and runs scored in the American League. They do not strike out a lot, however, Here’s a projected lineup:

  1. Juan Pierre, LF
  2. Omar Vizquel, 3B
  3. Paul Konerko, 1B
  4. Adam Dunn, DH
  5. Carlos Quentin, RF
  6. AJ Pierzynski, C
  7. Alexei Ramirez, SS
  8. Alejandro Ae Aza, CF
  9. Gordan Beckham, 2B

The Sox do have a very good rotation. It features Gavin Floyd, John Danks, Mark Buehrle, and Jake Peavy. They are third in the AL in both FIP and xFIP and have the second highest AL WAR among starting rotations (13.4). They strike out a respectable 6.23 per nine innings and walk only 2.38 per nine and have thrown the fifth most innings out of any rotation in the AL. Here are the pitching match-ups:

Monday

CC Sabathia (15-5, 2.56 ERA) vs. Jake Peavy (4-4, 5.27 ERA)

Tuesday

Phil Hughes (1-3, 8.24 ERA) vs. John Danks (4-8, 3.79 ERA)

Wednesday

AJ Burnett (8-9, 4.23 ERA) vs. Gavin Floyd (9-9, 3.96 ERA)

Thursday

Bartolo Colon (8-6, 3.30 ERA) vs. Phil Humber (8-7, 3.44 ERA)

The White Sox also have a solid bullpen. Sergio Santos has taken over the closer role and is set up by Jesse Crain and south paw Matt Thorton. Santos and Thorton strike out a ridiuclous amount of guys, but they also walk a lot. Lefties Will Ohman and Chris Sale have also put up solid numbers along with recently acquired Jason Fraser. All of these guys can get out, so it’s gonna be a little bit different than watching a series against the Orioles.

This is gonna be a very good series to watch, but unfortunately I only see the Yankees taking two and heading to Boston with a split. I hope I’m wrong and they take three or four though. The first game will start tonight a little after 8 pm.
